Long Description |
The very first post office was established in
Manito in 1851. In 1857 the post office was relocated in the Berkstressers
, also known as the Egypt Station, now Manito. The first Post Master
was John Rosier. Sometime during the 1890’s the Post Office
relocated to the west side of the railroad tracks, north of Bernshausen
Garage. This Post Office was built by Judge McComas. In the 1900’s,
the office once again moved, this time south of Hibberd Service.
The mail carriers in the rural areas would serve their routes by
horse and closed-in rig. In November, 1952 the post office moved
to new quarters. At this new location, sometime in Feb. 1965, the
post office was robbed. The post office wall was ruined by the robbery,
so it needed to be rebuilt. In 1970, the Manito Post office announced
that A. Stetzler & Sons were given a contract to rebuild the
post office. In July, 1971, the post office employees had moved into
the new location on the northwest corner of Market and Washington
St.
Now the Post Office is known as Willet’s Winery. It was established in 2005. Willet’s Winery opened on April 20, 2006. Chris Willet now owns the Winery. |
