Significance |
One of three historic cemeteries in Manito. Oldest in the community which is the resting place for Civil War Veterans. | |||
Long Description |
Oak Grove Cemetery was used as a burial site before
being recognized as an official cemetery. The first person to be
buried there was Mary C Cox, who was only 8 years old when she died.
The Cox family owned the land and gave it to the Village of Manito
after burying her there. Ancestors of Manito residents today are
buried there. Only five of thirty people buried there during the
1860’s were over the age of twenty. There are forty-seven veterans
buried in Oak Grove Cemetery. Out of the forty-seven, there are forty-six
Civil War veterans and one World War II veteran. Only family members
of those buried there now may be buried in Oak Grove Cemetery today.
The gravestones in the cemetery are laid out in a semicircle, all
of them facing the east. It is said that when the resurrection occurs,
those who rise will meet with the Savior who will come from that
direction.
